20.06.09 Whelan Focuses on the Future
Based on Gosforth Way, the prestigious contracts have enabled Whelan to maintain it's turnover target of £30millions.
The company will now focus the second half of 2009 on consolidating the business by winning specialist construction contracts across the North Eastas well as continuing to deliver quality projects to existing clients.
Earlier this year Whelan completed work on the Coopers Building development in Newcastle, which saw the company as the sole construction company in conjunction with Ryder's Architecture the Hanro Group in a contract worth £1.75millions. An interesting find was made when an archaeological excavation recorded Roman remains beneath, which are now preserved in-situ for future studies.
Work is due to complete shortly at two of Whelan's sites, including The Cleveland Retail Park development, which Whelan has been working on since September. The 60,000sq ft development has seen the construction company redevelop five of the previously run-down retail units in to modern alternatives with mezzanine floors. The redevelopment is due to be complete in July.
A £1.9 million new build timber framed doctors surgery in Stockton is also due for completion in the coming weeks. Whelan has also been working in conjunction with Middlesbrough College at both The Cleveland Retail Park and Stockton sites and has proved instrumental in the students studies by providing on-site visits and tuition to further the first hand experiences of the students.
Work is well under way at The Great North Park site, where the compnany is building 42 affordable flats and a care home in a contract worth £8.4millions. The site has been named as the largest site in the region to employ the use of the environmentally friendly, "Ecojoist system," which will see Whelan use 60% less timber than standard floor joists.
A £4millions contract for a new storage facility has been awarded by Salem Tubes on the back of Whelan building the company's factory five years ago. The new contract sees Whaln creating a storage facility in Prudhoe which is 60,000sq ft in total, but only 30 metres wide. A challenge which is being relished by Whelan.
The company is gearing up to start work at a number of other new builds and redevelopments in the region and is looking forward to starting work on new contracts.
One of which is a £20millions redevelopment on New Bridge Street. Once work commences on site later this year, Whelan will be instrumental in creating student accommodation as well as 10,000sq ft of retail space.
Tony Whelan, managing director of Whelan Construction, commented, "It is hugely satisfying that we have completed a number of high profile projects on time and within budget, but most importantly maintained high levels of customer satisfaction.
"We have a team in which I am truly proud; However, we won't be resting on our laurels we will continue to analyse our best practices and methodologies to work smarter and oush forward so that we are in good shape to take on more projects once business picks up again."
